Sound and Music in the MENA Region

This study group explores musical traditions—and, more broadly, sound—across the MENA region. It emphasizes the major centers of Islamicate civilization, including Arab, Persianate, and Turkic regions, highlighting the diverse musical heritages that have emerged across these areas.

The format will be shaped in part by the interests of the participants and may include both theoretical discussions and opportunities for hands-on musical practice. In addition to cultivating performance-based learning for those interested, this working group also fosters critical conversations around music history, theory, politics and aesthetics. This working group is open to all interested individuals, both at Yale and from other educational institutions, regardless of prior musical experience. Although welcoming to all, it is primarily intended for students and scholars in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Religious Studies, Music Performance, Musicology, and the Institute of Sacred Music. When necessary, the group will adapt activities to accommodate participants without formal music training. Beyond serving educational purposes, this working group will foster an atmosphere of cultural exchange, belonging, and support for students from the regions and traditions under study.

Throughout the academic year, the group plans to host a series of guest speakers and performers, including renowned international artists and scholars who are experts in the traditions under study. In addition to guest sessions, this working group includes student-led presentations, discussions, and performances as part of its agenda.
