Eurasian Media Studies
The Eurasian Media Studies Working Group seeks to promote cross-disciplinary scholarship that engages with the history of technology in the region. We aim to critically examine both media devices and theories of mediation emerging from the Former Soviet Union and the greater Asian continent at large. Bridging the past and present, we are interested in setting readings and hosting discussions that engage the region’s history with newly emergent frameworks in media studies. Our reseаrch interests and discussion topics encompass all aspects of the field, and we encourage transdisciplinary work. We are fascinated by forgotten media subjects, such as conflicting theories of technological mediation in the late Qing era, Bulgaria’s unique early computing culture and electronic trade with India, and the ghostly half-life of Soviet ternary computing. The group emphasizes and encourages transdisciplinary research and welcomes all students and faculty with an interest in media studies, STS, and the region.
