The Whitney Humanities Center at Yale welcomes applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship (2025–26) that will support the Spring 2026 Franke Seminar in the Humanities: Media and Protection. This seminar invites Yale College students to explore how screen-based media—from Phantasmagoria in the eighteenth century to today’s ubiquitous Zoom calls—create protective “bubbles” that shield us from apparent dangers, but in doing so trap us in suffocating enclosures, detached from our immediate surroundings.
The selected fellow will be in residence at the Whitney Humanities Center in New Haven for the full academic year 2025–26 and will contribute to our interdisciplinary community of scholars. Responsibilities include contributing to the Franke Lectures in the Humanities and participating in the teaching of the Franke Seminar (Spring 2026). This non-renewable fellowship is for ten months (August 1, 2025–May 31, 2026) and carries a stipend of $70,000 and full benefits.
We invite applications from international scholars in film and media studies, visual studies, and critical studies. The ideal candidate will have a strong competence in media theory and archaeology, and a developed interest in one or more of the following fields: environmental studies, critical race and gender studies, disability studies, or biopolitical and geopolitical studies. Organizational skills, as well as leadership in research groups, are appreciated.
