The Modern Language Association has awarded its twenty-eighth Howard R. Marraro Prize to Yale professor Alessandro Giammei (Italian Studies) for his book Ariosto in the Machine Age, published by the University of Toronto Press. The prize is awarded biennially for an outstanding book in the field of Italian literature or comparative literature involving Italian.
In the words of the selection committee, “Alessandro Giammei’s Ariosto in the Machine Age brilliantly reconsiders the most influential poet of the Renaissance as an unexpected catalyst for Italian modernism… . With erudition, rigor, and eloquence, Giammei investigates a kaleidoscopic array of archival, multimedia material drawn from the domains of painting, literature, and cinema, giving us a landmark study of Ariosto’s living legacy.”
