Kyama Mugambi

Kyama Mugambi researches historical, social, cultural, theological, and epistemological themes in African religion. His first book, A Spirit of Revitalization: Urban Pentecostalism in Kenya (Baylor University Press 2020), traces the history of Pentecostalism in Kenya. It was hailed as a singular contribution to the fields of mission studies, world Christianity, and intercultural theology. His current book project examines the Christian interface between secularizing and sacralizing impulses in the African city.

He is working on several research projects on religion in Africa. One project brings together six researchers to investigate expressions of communality within cosmopolitan settings. Another project studies alternative ways of reflecting on religion in modern Africa. It takes the case of Pentecostalism and analyzes its role in the transformation of African religious imagination. His recent courses at Yale include 2000 years of Christianity in Africa, Christianity and Coloniality in Contemporary Africa, and African Pentecostalism.
