Martha Henzy is the Cullman-Payson Postdoctoral Fellow in Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery. Martha specializes in visual cultures of the present, researching how authors, artists, and filmmakers interpret and perform discursive norms of bearing witness. Her current book project, “Performances of Witness: Public Selves in the Age of Memory,” brings together theater, documentary film, and performance art from the end of the twentieth century through the present to explore how acts of bearing witness to mass violence and genocide are performed in public and under surveillance. She also writes on art and culture for Mid Theory Collective, a digital magazine on contemporary culture of which she is a founding member and managing editor.
