Fernando Rubio is director of the Yale Center for Language Study and professor, adjunct, of linguistics. His research interests are in the areas of second language acquisition and teaching methodologies. He is the author of two textbooks, Tercer Milenio (2009) and Juntos (2018), coeditor of the volume Hybrid Language Teaching and Learning: Exploring Theoretical, Pedagogical and Curricular Issues, (2012), and coauthor of Creating Effective Blended Language Learning Courses: A Research-Based Guide from Planning to Evaluation (2020), the winner of the Modern Language Association Kenneth W. Mildenberger Prize in 2021. He has also authored numerous articles and book chapters on issues related to second language acquisition, assessment, and technology-enhanced language teaching. He has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator on multiple federal grants, including a Title VI National Language Resource Center grant at the University of Utah.
Professor Rubio has served as a board member on numerous professional organizations for the past two decades, including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Joint National Committee for Languages (JNCL), and as president of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations from 2021–22. Throughout his career, Professor Rubio has received multiple professional awards including, among many others, the ACTFL Wilga Rivers Award for Leadership in World Language Education; the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Distinguished Leadership Award; and the Utah Foreign Language Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
